Hovhannes Karakhanyan: Duduk and Armenian Music
The roots of duduk music date back to the times of the Armenian king Tigran the Great (95-55 BC). This music accompanies traditional popular songs and dances from different regions of Armenia and is performed on occasions such as weddings and funerals. The sound of the duduk is a blend of melancholy and sweetness, situated halfway between Europe and Asia, which makes its culture very rich.
Since 2005, the duduk and its music have been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The course is aimed at all lovers of this instrument, regardless of their level, whether it’s your first time accessing it or you’re trying to perfect your skills. Various aspects will be covered, such as knowledge of the instrument, repertoire, playing tips, tuning, scales and modes, reeds and mouthpieces, etc.
If you do not have an instrument, the teacher will bring several for use in the course, as well as new mouthpieces.
