Ross Daly: An Introduction to Contemporary Modal Composers
Many people consider “traditional” music to be primarily a reflection of the creative activity of their respective communities in the past. In the world of modal musical traditions, this is especially evident as most of them tend to want to emphasize their connection to the perceived antiquity of their tradition.
In recent years however, there has been a significant increase in the creative output of exponents of modal music in almost all of the locations where it is encountered. These works often include influences which extend beyond what are normally seen as the borders of individual idioms, with contemporary composers drawing on sources which, in many cases, derive from traditions which are geographically distant from one another.
Approximately 25 years ago Ross Daly coined the term Contemporary Modal Music to refer to this burgeoning genre.
In this seminar he will focus on a selection of compositions of some of the diverse members of the community of composers who work within this genre.
