We are delighted to announce the autumn edition of our eleventh year at Labyrinth Catalunya, taking place at Fundació La Plana from 20–25 October 2026.
Following our spring gathering in April, this second period brings together five seminars, with three teachers joining us for the first time and two returning to Labyrinth Catalunya. Together, they represent a rich and diverse range of musical traditions from across the Mediterranean and beyond.
Saina Zamanian, based in Paris, will introduce participants to Dastgāh, the modal system of Persian classical music, exploring its modal organisation, aesthetic principles, repertoire, and its deep relationship with improvisation and oral transmission. We are also delighted to welcome Martha Mavroidi, one of the most creative and influential musicians, singers, composers, and educators in today’s Greek music scene. Her seminar, New Songs in Modal Music: Orchestration & Composition, will explore how melodic and rhythmic patterns from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans can become the seeds for new compositions, arrangements, and improvisations.
For the first time at Labyrinth Catalunya, Gigi Oliva will open a musical world that has not previously been part of our programme: the polyphonic singing of Sardinia’s oral tradition — one of the most remarkable and distinctive vocal traditions of the Mediterranean.
We also welcome back Khaled Al Hafez, who joined us last spring, for a seminar dedicated to Arabic maqamat, muwashshahat, rhythm, vocal technique, ornamentation, and the expressive aesthetics of the classical Arabic tradition. And after several years, Periklis Papapetropoulos returns to Labyrinth Catalunya with a seminar open to instrumentalists of all kinds, exploring the lavta, modal repertoire, makam, ornamentation, ensemble playing, and the musical connections that weave through Greece, Turkey, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
We look forward to welcoming you to La Plana this October.
