Kelly Thoma: Modal Music Group

In this seminar Kelly will work with the group on a selection of pieces by contemporary modal composers, as well as some traditional melodies. Without the use of a score, but with a lot of repetition, the students will be asked to memorise the compositions and, together with Kelly, orchestrate them using dynamics, harmony, frequency relationships, ornamentation, variations and other ideas that will arise in the process.

The conduct of the seminar depends a lot on the composition of the group, namely on which instruments the participants will play, so the exact repertoire cannot yet be predicted. However, a month before the start of the seminar, some suggested pieces will be sent to the participants so whoever wishes to prepare in advance, can do so.  The musical level of participants should be good enough on their instrument, so that they can memorise and play melodies with relative ease, some of which might be quite complex. Anyone with patience, a love for teamwork and an appetite for repetition is welcome!

Sheet music: One of the goals of the seminar is for students to memorize the repertoire, so scores will not be used. However, if someone has any special difficulty with this, they will be able to receive the scores
