Alexandros Papadimitrakis

Alexandros Papadimitrakis was born in Athens. He studied oud and lavta with Yurdal Tokcan, Sokratis Sinopoulos, Christos Tsiamoulis, Haig Yazdjian. His endless musical curiosity led him to attend workshops on makam music by Kudsi Erguner, Omer Erdogdular, Ross Daly and on arabic oud by Taiseer Elias, Nasseer Shamma and Ahmad Al Khatib.

He is a graduate of National Conservatory of Athens, University of Athens-Department of Musicology, Codarts Rotterdam University for the Arts (MMus). His studies and research are focused on Ottoman and Greek music traditions but he also adopts techniques and aesthetics coming from the Arab world and from contemporary modal music scene.

Alexandros has a broad experience performing different musical genres varying from Ottoman & Baroque music to contemporary improvised music. He collaborated, performing worldwide, with some of the most prominent artists: Michalis Kouloumis, Kudsi Erguner, L’Achéron/François Joubert-Caillet, Sokratis Sinopoulos, Ilias Plastiras, Rebetien, Neda, Chris Jennings, Michalis Cholevas, Kemal Dinc, Ahmet Aslan, Cigdem Aslan, Willem Tanke, Robyn Shulkowsky and many others.

He has also been active in dance and theatre productions working with choreographer Lia Tsolaki, Greek Center of Folklore Studies, Theatre of a Shoe, National Theatre of Greece. Since 2013 he is teaching oud and lavta at Codarts, Rotterdam University for the Arts.
