Ney and Ottoman classical music workshop – Christos Barbas
The aim of this workshop is the practical approach to the music that is usually performed with ney, both in the secular and religious repertoire. The particular style on which it is focused is based on the oral tradition of the musicians belonging to the Mevlevi tradition, as well as on the innovative style that emerged in the 20th century and brought the ney closer to what is supposed to be the model for every instrument in the framework of Ottoman music: the human voice.
For this reason the workshop is aimed not only at ney players but also at singers or instrumentalists who play other instruments capable of playing microtonal scales (violin, cello, oud, tanbur, kanun…) and want to become familiar with the modal system of the Turkish makam.
