Evgenios Voulgaris: Ottoman Music & Makam / 1st period / April 3 – 5, 2020
The subject of the seminar will be the compositions and the repertoire of Ottoman and Turkish urban art music. Works from the repertoire of Ottoman and Turkish urban art music will be taught and examined through the prism of modal analysis with the intent that the student will better understand the music in question and will also be able to utilize the knowledge gained within the context of improvisations (Taksim).
The seminar is aimed at all musicians who play instruments capable of reproducing the microtonal intervals of this specific tradition (including singers), who are interested in this specific musical genre, or who are interested in acquiring a deeper understanding of Makam, given that it is central to the composition and interpretation of many other musical traditions which present a similar modal logic.
