Burak Savas: Turkish Singing

This seminar welcomes musicians and singers who possess a curiosity and a desire to experience Makam singing, complete with its ornamental embellishments and distinctive intervals as seen in Ottoman-Turkish music.

The primary focus of the lessons will revolve around practical exercises that involve singing and working with compositions from the Ottoman era, created by sultans and diverse composers between the 17th and 19th centuries. Initially, we will delve into the historical background of this music and gain an understanding of how the concept of Makam functions within the realm of traditional Turkish music.

Additionally, we will explore the art of improvisation within the Makam scale and enhance our skills in creating improvisations, also known as “Gazel.” Moreover, we will delve into the captivating world of Ottoman-Turkish poetry and its intricate connection to music, comprehending how the lyrical aspects intertwine harmoniously with the melodies.
